If you watch enough MTV, you might recognize the exterior of the Plaza. Its circular driveway and canopy of hundreds of light bulbs has been in many rap videos. The irony is that while the videos use this frontage to convey a sense of extravagance, the Plaza is actually somewhat of a low-rollers' casino. The Plaza's low limits, including dollar Blackjack and penny slot machines, attract a certain kind of crowd (lots of blue hair). Built in 1971 on the site of the old Union Pacific Railroad Depot, the Plaza has an unused Amtrak station right in the hotel and the Las Vegas Greyhound terminal in the back. The décor probably hasn't changed much since the resort's inception, but that grants its indescribable Vegas feel. Staying at the Plaza is not a bad option if you're in town for a couple of days. The resort offers more than 1,000 spacious rooms and suites at affordable prices; they are bigger than most in the downtown area and nicely decorated. Visitors can dine in the Center Stage Restaurant that overlooks the fabulous "Fremont Street Experience" light and sound show, with its 2.1 million lights and booming symphonic sound - a must see attraction. Other entertainment includes a show at the Plaza Showroom or live music at the Omaha Lounge. A fitness center, a year-round pool/sundeck with a quarter-mile jogging track, and tennis courts also are available. The Plaza convention facilities are the largest in downtown Vegas and can accommodate any type of event. Other amenities includes a McDonald's, Subway Sandwich Shop, Seattles Best Coffee, Heritage Wedding Chapel, gift shop/convenience store, barber shop and beauty salon, one of a kind Jerky Shop, two snack bars, and an arcade.
