The Mirage was the first project entirely supervised by Las Vegas legend Steve Wynn. He envisioned a resort that was much more than a casino-hotel; the Mirage was to be an entertainment Mecca. Originally considered a huge gamble, the Mirage turned out to be a huge success.
Today, the Mirage is one of the most luxurious casinos in the world. One can't miss the Mirage centrally located on the Vegas Strip. In addition to the exotic trees and plants surrounding the property, the front of the Mirage features a huge volcano that erupts every 15 minutes (after dusk), its most notable attraction. Those who stand closest to the volcano may even feel the heat from the flames and often get sprayed with a bit of mist.
Upon entering the resort, one is greeted by a tropical rainforest theme. Banana trees, palms, and waterfalls adorn the inside of the 90-foot atrium. A 20,000-gallon aquarium simulating a coral reef highlights the adjacent lobby. The 53-foot-wide tank is filled with a myriad of tropical fish and can be quite mesmerizing to watch while at the check-in desk.
Leading to the lobby is a corridor featuring a glass-enclosed area inhabited by several of the famous white tigers of Siegfried & Roy. For a small fee, visitors can see the rare white tigers up close in Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden. The tour also includes a look at the Dolphin Habitat.
The casino floor is spacious and elegantly designed. It seems many others feel the same way, as the tables are always bustling. The Sports Book features a movie-sized screen with theater sound and comfortable seats. This area is a great place to watch football on Sundays or get crazy with March Madness. The poker room is also noteworthy. There are a lot of professional sharks in these waters, but the atmosphere is comfortable and the games are well run. In short, The Mirage is a good place to find out how good you are (or think you are) at poker.
The Mirage guest rooms are tastefully designed, with oak armoires containing 25" screen TVs. The phones in the rooms accommodate modems and fax machines. However, the best part of staying at hotel is definitely the pool area and spa. The pool itself is immense, with waterfalls, palm trees and waterslides. It truly is an oasis in the desert (with great service and optional private cabanas). People who take the free tram between the Mirage and Treasure Island might be able to sneak a peek at this enticing area.
