The Sahara opened in December 1952, on the site of the old Club Bingo. It has recently undergone a massive renovation to add a new tower, a new parking garage and double the size of the casino floor. Sadly, the famous Sahara sign, once the tallest in Las Vegas, has been retired in favor of a huge camel sign. In fact, the entire facade of the Sahara has been changed. The new Sahara is trying to achieve a Moroccan look with onion topped domes and bright colors, but instead looks more like Disney's Aladdin come to life.


This is particularly evident in the rooms where the kitsch factor is low, but the gaudiness factor is off the scale. The rooms are comfortable but designed with loud stripes and stars everywhere. If you return to the room a bit tipsy, it can be a real assault to the visual senses. (So we've heard).


Still, the renovations to the Sahara are worth checking out.


It's also important to note that although the Sahara doesn't aggressively discourage guests from bringing their children, they feel that other casinos have better accommodations and activities for kids.


The Sahara Hotel and Casino has announced the name of its new roller coaster as 'SPEED - The Ride', which will soon be LasVegas' fastest roller coaster when it opens this spirng.
